GAME CHANGER AS NEW TB DRUG SLASHES DEATH RATES AMONG DR-TB PATIENTS.

WHO-World Health Organization endorsed new regimen drugs for drug- resistant Tuberculosis that is the Bedaquiline and Delamanid.

Bedaquiline, a new treatment can cure 80 percent of sufferers according to a trial hailed ‘game changer’ in the fight against the Global killer in Belarus.

The Belarus trial cure rate -80 percent –was largely replicated in Bedaquiline trials in other countries in Eastern Europe, Africa, and Southeast Asia.

The results from this study confirm that newer drugs like Bedaquiline can cure and are game changers for people living with Multidrug-resistant and extremely drug-resistant tuberculosis, according to the lead scientific director of International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease, Dr Paula Fujiwara.

From the study of the trial results confirms the effectiveness of bed aquiline as promising.

In Kenya, procuring the Bedaquiline has not been effective because the Kenya Government says it is expensive and hence has collaborated with other partners and stakeholders to help them get the drugs at a cheaper price, Like MSF-Africa and Global Lancet Africa.

In essence to this,650 Multidrug-resistant and extremely drug-resistant Tuberculosis patients will be enrolled in the program every year starting next month until all patients are covered.

Currently, Kenya has 1577 patients who are living with MD-TB and XDR-TB.

New Methods Drawn in Global Fight Against

Researchers in Indonesia and Ethiopia have found a way of testing children's stool for TB disease instead of sputum test which is very difficult among children.

More than 4,000 experts on lung health gathered in The Hague on Thursday October 25, 2018 as they unveiled several new weapons in the battle against tuberculosis.

One potential game changer is the new method of testing children under five for the disease through stool test, this method is contrary to the painful windpipe procedure which children undergo in order to extract sputum since they can not produce on their own.

An estimated 240,000 children die from tuberculosis every year. The disease is curable and rarely deadly in infants if diagnosed and treated in time. On the other hand approximately 90% of the children TB death cases are untreated and undetected.

Additionally, a new drug, bedaquiline, has shown impressive results in countries such as Belarus, South Africa and Vietnam - all of which have high rates of multidrug-resistant TB.

These breakthrough techniques are geared towards global eradication of TB within the stipulated time line. The methods and drugs will be replicated and spread to a global scale and reach the remotest parts.

SGDs and SANITATION in KENYA

AfDB-Approves-Us-391-Million-for-Kenyas-Water-and-Sanitation-Project.jpg
Sustainable Development Goal 6.2 challenges countries to achieve access to adequate and equitable sanitation and hygiene for all to end open defecation.

Under this vision, Kenya rolled out the ODF Campaign in 2011 with the aim of making Kenya 100 percent ODF by 2020.

Among the common to be addressed is hand washing. Hand washing with soap under running water is a simple behavior that can save lives.

It can cut deaths associated with diarrhoea by almost half and deaths from acute respiratory infections by nearly a quarter. Appropriate handwashing also allows children to learn, grow healthy and strengthen communities.

The knowledge about handwashing and its importance is high in Kenya. However, the actual practice remains a challenge.

According to the survey conducted in Kenyan in 2015 it was found that only 14 percent of the population had handwashing facilities on premises with soap and water.

There is need for schools and households to have access to a latrine and handwashing facility with water and soap present. This will help to double the protection against preventable diseases and deaths.

LATRINES
There is need to motivate communities across the board, to identify local solutions and commitments so as to construct and use latrines with handwashing facilities.

There is need for children, parents and guardians to change their sanitation and hygiene practices.

The Public Health Officers, Community Health Workers and Volunteers needs to support households by conducting follow-ups, reinforce positive behavior change and create new social norms.

The village elders, provincial administration and religious leaders needs to give their undivided support.

The unique roles of partners involved in health, sanitation and other community development agenda need to embraced.

Abuta
