FAILURE TO SORT GARBAGE:THE BIG CHALLENGE.

Recent discoveries have been highlighted by the media that the reason why Nairobi has
huge piles of garbage at disposal, is the ultimate failure to sort out garbage into their
respective groups.
Sorting of the garbage will place each where it belongs for instance , Organic and rotting
garbage, Plastics ,Glasses and metal as well as wet and blood stained garbage mostly from
hospital will be in separate boxes.
Several stakeholders in the Garbage recycling sector have raised the concern that City
dwellers mix the garbage making recycling impossible because mixing them keeps
garbage dirty and not safe for recycling this keeps the garbage heaps piling up.

The Nairobi county government has acknowledged that it can’t manage the
waste, with 2,475 tons being produced each day. Addis Ababa, Ethiopia has
a similar population but only generates 1,680 tons per day.
Nairobi’s current waste disposal system is fraught with major problems. These range
from the city’s failure to priorities solid waste management to inadequate infrastructure
and the fact that multiple actors are involved whose activities aren’t controlled. This very
challenge is visible in the garbage boxes we installed at Kangemi.
The first step towards curbing this problem is changing people mindset and teaching
them how to sort garbage for easier recycling so that garbage is reduced to manageable
quantities.

NEW REGIMENS FOR MULTI-DRUG RESISTANT TB SHORTENS TREATMENT PERIOD:

Two new regimens have been developed to treat Multi- drug resistant TB (MDR TB) and extensively-drug TB (XDR TB). The trials from the research have shown promise to enhance treatments of patients suffering from drug-resistant Tuberculosis.
The regimens involve novel drugs, Janssen’s Bedaquiline (B) and TB Alliance’s candidate drug Pretomanid (Pa) in combination with few TB drugs.
According to the SCI DEC.Net publication, “Latest figures from the WHO shows that of those who are able to access treatment, only half of those with multi-drug resistant TB and only 28 per cent of those with extensively-drug resistant TB are cure.
Preliminary results of trials involving the regimens were presented at Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections in US last month.
Treating MDR-TB can take nine months to more than two years and is expensive while treating XDR-TB has no standard care and patients are often treated for years.
Now treatment patients with drug-resistant patients may be reduced to about four to six months while the same regimen could treat most drug-resistant TB in about six months from two years.
Two trials are currently underway in East and sub-Saharan Africa; Kenya among them.
