Over last week, school children from two public schools received various nutrition tips for their health, as well as training for a fit and healthy body.

Drawn from ages 9-14, the kids and Mr. Kei Kuriwaki from Ajinomoto Foundation discussed, some with an amazing deal of nutritional knowledge, about how to eat for a healthy life.

They also highlighted the benefits of various foods in the body, and why for each day, the nutrients should be incorporated in the student diet at school and home.

Further to that, Tanita's Eri Tozawa mesmerized the children with her easy working out training, which can be practiced by any person. The children, and indeed the teachers, were impressed by it and even sought to join in the process, much to the excitement of both.

These activities form part of RESULTS Japan's efforts to improve nutrition knowledge among the people and children of Kangemi, as well as sensitize them on the need for better exercise for good health.

Over the forthcoming year, several of such and related activities, including sanitation, toilets, and environmental maintenance will be carried out, much to the betterment of the general health of the people.

At RESULTS Japan, we have trained our eyes on these thematic areas, and with the cooperation of concerned parties, we hope to achieve a great deal of improvement in them.

BEATIFICATION IS GOOD WHEN DONE HOLISTICALY

The UN-Habitat executive director, Maimunah Mohd Sharif has got the attention of ongoing beautification programme by Nairobi City County Government and he has commended Governor Mike Sonko for doing a good job. The Director Mr. Sharif is perceptibly overwhelmed by the activities that are done by the county government and he elaborated that this is a holistic approach that will not only make the city attractive but also protect and preserve the environment to ensure that it is kept clean and green.

This was a major topic during the Sustainable Blue Economy Conference at the Kenyatta International Convention Center (KICC) on Tuesday, November 27.According to Sharif this is a very brilliant ideas for the beautification programme that will make Nairobi a green city.

Sonko also called for an end to pollution of oceans, lakes and rivers, terming it a danger to all mankind. He, however, hailed the recent ban on the use of plastic bags by the Kenya government saying the decision has drastically reduced the amount of plastics ending up in the water bodies. “We must conserve our environment. Ocean, lakes and rivers pollution poses a danger to all mankind. Kenya recently banned the use of plastic bags, most of which ended up in dump-sites and into the water system," he said.

This being said and done, the areas surrounding Nairobi are a menace and how I wish sonko should visit Kangemi, Kibera , Mathare and other areas. It is important to reconsider also cleaning and beatifying this areas for equitable development agenda.

As Results Japan Kenya office we need to approach Sonko and give him the overview of the conditions of these places. I believe team work and Advocacy can work so that this will be of great importance.

A HERO INDEED

As the world marked international women’s day on 8th March, I take this opportunity on behalf of Result Japan Kenyan office to celebrate our director Ms. Noriko Shirasu. She is indeed a heroine when it comes to fight against TB in Kangemi slums here in Kenya.

The 3 year project aims at ensuring zero TB deaths by renovation of TB clinic to ensure patients are attended to under conducive and patient friendly environment. Construction of modern laboratory and installation of TB LAMP machine at Kangemi Health Centre plays a major role in making sure new cases are detected early thus minimizing the spread of TB in the community. Installation of garbage bins at Kangemi Health Centre and in the community improves sanitation hence lowers the risks of TB infections.

Nutrition education to patients improves their nutrition status thus making the patients to recover quickly and prevents them from being vulnerable to re-infections. For mothers and children, nutrition education is vital to ensure they are healthy with strong immune systems to protect them from TB infections.

Arigato Gozaimus.
