THE STATE OF MDR PATIENTS IN KANGEMI

Kenya features in all three high-burden country lists under the categories of tuberculosis, multi-drug resistant TB and TB/HIV.

MDR-TB is caused by bacteria that are resistant to at least one first-line anti-TB drug. The treatment takes longer than treatment for normal TB.

MDR-TB occurs when patients develop resistance to Rifampicin and Isoniazid, the two most powerful anti-TB drugs.

At the TB clinic in Kangemi Health Centre, there is one MDR-TB patient who was initiated on TB treatment in October, last year.

The treatment progress has been good, showing tremendous improvement in terms of the sputum results for the follow-up months and as well as the culture results determining the degree of resistance to any drug regimen of TB.

Even though it is expensive to the Government to sustain the treatment process for MDR-TB Patient; rapid interventions and sensitization of people on Community TB should be prioritized at any level of governance so that the infection rate is minimized.

The patient (David) have cooperated fully with the assistance of the TB coordinator, Mrs. Peres and the MOH Nurse Mrs. Mary at the TB clinic as it is evident from the laboratory results of Culture, GeneXpert and the Corresponding sputum samples have turned negative.

Physically he is doing well and in the next four months, he will be discharged from treatment, owing to positive signs of treatment progress.

SCHOOL NUTRITION SEMINARS

As the schools re-open in May, I am looking forward to conducting nutrition education sessions in the 8 public primary schools within Westlands Sub County.

During the sessions, the pupils will learn the three major food groups: carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins, and minerals, check their weight and height and fill in a food survey questionnaire.

The food survey questionnaire will be used to determine what food groups the pupils consume often.

This will assist during the lesson as the pupils will be taught how to combine various food groups to make a balanced diet.

This is important as the pupils will remind and encourage their parents to providing balanced diets at homes.

The pupil’s weight will be monitored monthly whereas the height will be monitored after every three months.

This will be used to monitor their growth which serves as an indicator that they are taking well-balanced meals in their homes.

MY FIRST DAY AT WORK

It has been a bright and wonderful morning.

I actually have received a warm reception from my colleges and supervisors who are great people to work and interact with at a professional level.

It has been an interesting experience learning another new language unknown to me, that is, Japanese.

It is an interactive learning session. I strongly tend to believe it will sharpen my interpersonal and communication skills.

This great opportunity offered to me will create a platform for improving and developing my professional skills in nutrition thereby improving my skills in offering nutrition services to my clients with the best of my abilities.

I strongly believe in teamwork, commitment, diligence, and competence in my work so as to achieve my goals as assigned to me for purpose of meeting the project initiative and plans.

TB LAMP CAN HELP IN MASSIVE TB SCREENING AND PRIMARY DETECTION

TB Article pic.png

Given that many TB patients in Kenya are not detected the use of TB LAMP promises to plug the hole in the missed cases during detection.

The problem of missed detection is due to one-at-a-time testing, which takes a lot of time, making the procedure cumbersome.

TB LAMP can process many samples at a time, and in a very short while.

This makes the method ideal for peripheral health centres where most of the patients come to seek diagnostic services.

This means that patients will not be misdiagnosed for ailments they do not have as was the case.

In Cameroon and Haiti, the method has proven to be very helpful in increasing the number of detected TB cases, much embedding the effort to reduce the prevalence of the diseases in those two countries.

If the method is accepted in Kenya, the number of detected cases will also rise a great deal.

The National TB Program, in its National Strategic Plan, has indicated the acceptance of all methods recommended by WHO in testing TB.

RESULTS Japan is in efforts to promote the replacement of smear microscopy with TB LAMP.
