Kenya, Japan And Canada Co-Host First Ever Global Sustainable Blue Economy In Nairobi.

The three-day Blue Economy conference kick-started on Monday morning of 26 November 2018 amid disruption of traffic in the city.

The event is co-hosted by three countries Kenya, Japan, and Canada, with Eleven Heads of State being among delegates that will attend the country’s inaugural ocean economy summit.

Kenyan Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Monica Juma indicated over 11,000 delegates had already confirmed participation exceeding an earlier target of 6,000 delegates.

Nairobi City County Governor, Mr. Mike Sonko said during a welcome dinner that ‘The Sustainable Blue Economy Conference in Nairobi builds on the momentum of the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the 2015 Climate Change Conference in Paris and the UN Ocean Conference 2017’.

Preparations to host a large number of delegates have been going on in the last few weeks with high ways being spruced up properly as Nairobi prepares to host the first ever global sustainable Blue Economy Conference.

The conference will focus on creating sustainable economic growth, ensuring healthy & clean waters, building safe and resilient coastal communities.

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko added that all are set for the event and they will open several doors for Kenyans.The main agendas for the conference are:

• creating sustainable economic growth;
• ensuring healthy and clean waters; and
• building safe and resilient coastal communities.

It is estimated that half of the world’s population lives within 60 kilometers of the sea and three-quarters of all large cities are located along the coast.

Blue economy industries account for the livelihoods of 660 to 820 million people worldwide, with women accounting for about 15 percent of those engaged in fisheries.

This makes the blue economy a major blueprint to the global realization of the UN SDGS.
