HOSPITAL WASTE INVESTIGATION

Last week on Thursday and Friday we embarked on a mission to find out the actual situation of hospital waste within 5 Westlands Sub County facilities.

We visited Westlands Health Centre, Karura Health Centre, Lower Kabete Health Centre, Mji wa Huruma Health Centre, and Kangemi Health Centre.

One shocking discovery we made on our hospital trips was that the collection of the hospital waste which is under Nairobi city council does not take place, and if it does it’s after a very long period of time. This has led to the accumulation of huge waste piles in hospitals.

The county claimed that they lack the capacity to do so in terms of personnel and garbage trucks.

The facilities rely on well-wishers and partnerships for waste collection. Both Lower Kabete and Karura were being supported by the University of Maryland where they hired private companies to do the collection on a weekly basis.

At Mji wa Huruma Health Centre, the situation is very risky, we found a pile of expired medicine placed right outside of the hospital waiting to be collected. They have remained there for a long time.

A common fact in all of the facilities is that they all lack incinerators, a vital component in hospital waste management that should not be overlooked.

The medics in those hospitals have knowledge about sorting and segregating the garbage and place them in different bags according to their classification. The waste management knowledge transfer, however, should be done regularly to keep them actively engaged in waste management.

Hospital waste is more hazardous compared to ordinary garbage, the waste comprises of used and stained cotton wool, used syringes, used gloves, blood, drips, expired medicine among other dangerous objects.

On several occasions, it has been reported that careless disposal of hospital waste has caused various infections not only in Kenya but also worldwide.

For this, we hope to campaign for a good cause to ensure our facilities manages the hospital waste diligently.
